Dr. Joy Calkin Student Awards

Overview:

The awards are named in memory of Dr. Joy Calkin, a pediatric nurse and health care advocate, funded by the Muttart Family Foundation and created to honour and build on the Hon. Landon Pearson’s children’s rights advocacy work and life-long dedication to developing a culture of respect for children’s rights in Canada.

The Dr. Joy Calkin student awards, ($5,000) will be awarded to an Indigenous graduate student studying any aspect of early childhood (generally children under six years of age) or an issue related to children and childhood. First Nations, Métis or Inuit students enrolled full-time in a program focusing on children and youth, children’s rights, or allied field at a Canadian university are eligible to apply for the award.

 

Eligibility:

  • Students enrolled full-time at a Canadian university and taking courses in child and youth studies, children’s rights/human rights, sociology or anthropology of childhood, education, social justice, or related programs are eligible to apply for the award. Undergraduate students in your first semester of 4th year of studies and graduate students who have not completed their graduate degree are eligible to apply.
  • First Nations, Métis or Inuit students enrolled full-time in a program focusing on children and youth, children’s rights, or allied field at a Canadian university are eligible to apply for the award.
  • The $5000 award is to be used for education-related expenses such as tuition, purchasing books, school materials, costs incurred to attend school (up to $4500) and subsequent travel costs ($500) to attend the Child Rights Academic Network (CRAN) conference in person if possible (or virtually) in Ottawa, Ontario on April 25, 2025 to receive their award and funding.

    Eligibility must be confirmed in the academic letter of recommendation.

  • 1. A 500-750-word description of a graduate research or advocacy project on or related to early childhood (or an issue related to children and childhood) that you will complete as part of your undergraduate or graduate degree program. Please include your research question(s), objectives, what method(s) you will use, what potential outcomes there might be because of your project and a brief timeline to complete your project.

    OR

    A 500-word description of the undergraduate honours research paper or capstone project you will complete by the end of your degree program on a timely issue that relates to understanding childhood and children’s lives and rights, especially early childhood: Describe the issue you have chosen to research. Why is it timely to investigate the issue. What is the context for understanding the issue you have selected. What preliminary literature have you consulted to help define your question. What is your timeline and plan to complete this work during your undergraduate degree program.

  • 2. 300-word description: Given the focus of the Landon Pearson Centre on children’s rights, describe how your proposed project or paper might be framed by a rights-respecting approach or include the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child

  • 4. Academic Reference Letter on letterhead (included in the pdf or sent separately)
