Joanne Scholdra 1931-2014

The University of Lethbridge expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Dr. Joanne Scholdra, a former Director of the University’s School of Nursing and longtime faculty member, who passed away on November 29, 2014 at the age of 83 years.

Joanne was born in Carmen, Manitoba to Hjalmar and Geneva Oss. She lived in rural Saskatchewan until grade 8, when she moved with her mother to Saskatoon to go to school. Joanne received her diploma in nursing from Saskatoon City Hospital and her BSc in nursing from the University of Saskatchewan at Saskatoon. She obtained a masters degree in nursing and a PhD in education from the University of Washington in Seattle.

Scholdra had extensive general nursing experience through appointments at Vancouver General Hospital, St. Mary Abbottis Hospital in London, England, Saskatoon City Hospital and the University of Alberta Hospital (1966-68) where she was supervisor of the pediatrics department and instructor in cardiothoracic nursing, gynecology, anatomy and physiology. She was also assistant professor and coordinator of the BSc program in nursing at the U of A.

She joined the Lethbridge Community College in 1970 as an instructor of medical-surgical nursing and was chairman of the College nursing program from 1974 to 1980

Scholdra came to the University of Lethbridge in summer 1980 when she was named to a five-year term as the director of the newly established School of Nursing. She continued to work as an associate professor in the school through the 1980s. An active faculty member, Scholdra produced a variety of papers and presentations and was granted numerous awards, including being named the winner of the Lethbridge Regional Hospital Award in 1988. She retired in 1990.

She is pre-deceased by her husband, the late Dr. Roman Scholdra, a charter member of the University of Lethbridge’s Alumni Association in 1967 and a Board of Governors member from 1979 through 1986; and by her parents Hjamar and Geneva Oss. Joanne is survived by her daughter Elke Scholdra.
