Liu, Jim Jiping

The University community wishes to express its most sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Dr. Jiping (Jim) Liu, a long-term member of the Faculty of Arts and Science (Department of Mathematics and Computer Science).

Jim, age 48 and a Faculty member since 1995, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He is survived by his spouse, Wendy Baorong Sun, and children Lily and David.

Jim was born in Qiqihaer city, Heilongjiang province, in the People's Republic of China on July 7, 1957. He obtained his B. Sc. and M. Sc. from Shandong University in China. He came to Canada to further his studies and obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1992 from Simon Fraser University, BC.

From 1992 to 1995 he worked as a research associate and post-doctoral fellow in Georgia State University and Simon Fraser University.

He came to the U of L in 1995, was promoted to associate professor in 2001, and has been a dependable, hardworking and exceptional colleague in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department of the University of Lethbridge for eleven years.

A funeral service was held at Martin Bros Riverview Chapel (610 4th St. S., Lethbridge), on Saturday, January 21, 2006. Following the service, there was a reception at the Liu house.

A memorial fund has been established in the names of Lily and David Liu.
