Louis-Phillippe Cormier

January 16, 1917 - November 28, 2001

Loving husband, father, grandfather, professor emeritus, advocate for. the French community, writer and researcher of early Canadian history, avid jogger and hockey fan.

As a young man from a small village in Quebec, Louis-Philippe enjoyed reading and languages. He completed his Classical Studies at the College of Nicolet, P.Q., and went on to Laval University in Quebec City. During the war years, he taught classical languages and worked as a translator in Washington,D.C.

Louis-Philippe began teaching French Literature at Michigan State University in 1946. During this post-war period, he obtained his doctorate in French Renaissance Literature from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Later, in 1968, he came to the University of Lethbridge as one of the founding members of the Modern Languages Department. While chairperson for several terms, his first love was always teaching and the camaraderie of his colleagues.

Retiring in 1982, Louis-Philippe continued to actively promote French language and culture through the Association Canadienne-Francaise of Lethbridge.

Louis-Philippe is survived by his wife, Madeleine Jobidon Cormier, his daughters Louise (David O'Brien) and Sylvie (Paul Smith), his grandsons Winston Cormier-Smith, Aidan O'Brien, Pascal Cormier-Smith and Olivier O'Brien. In Quebec, he is survived by his sisters Therese, Denise LeMay, Rolande Lefebvre, Beatrice Rompré, and brothers Jean and Albert. Louise-Philippe, we will miss your gentle kindness, and the wisdom and wit that touched so many around you.

Thank you to our friend" Dr. A.R.F. Williams, a special 'thank you' for the vigilance, warmth and attentive care given by the nurses and staff of St. Michael's Palliative Care Unit. The family gratefully declines flowers; if so desired, donations may be made in memory of Louise-Philippe to St. Michael's Health Centre.

Family and friends were invited to pay their respects on Thursday, December 6, 2001. Prayer's "Vigil Rites" were held on Friday, December 7, 2001 in Martin Bros. Riverview Chapel, 610· 4th Street South.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 2405 - 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge on Saturday, December 8, 2001.
