Request to Amend a Valid Immigration Document
You can only request an amendment of your study permit if an error was made by an IRCC officer when your permit was issued.
Note: If you are extending your current study permit, please review these instructions.
Immigration updates
IRCC announced that as of November 8, 2024, study permit holders are allowed to work up to 24 hours/week off-campus during regular academic terms.
On or off campus work authorization
To be authorized to work while you study, you must have one of the following work conditions printed on your valid study permit:
May accept employment on the campus of the institution at which registered in full-time studies
May work 24 hours per week off campus or full-time during regular breaks if meeting criteria outlined in paragraph 186(v) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.
May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria, per paragraph R186(f), (v) or (w) and must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria.
If your study permit does not have work conditions on it, you can request an amendment to have them added. You must have work conditions on your permit before you can apply for a Social Insurance Number.
If you need support with the Amendment application, please book an appointment with an International Student Advisor.
Amendment Overview
IRCC will only fix a mistake on your temporary resident immigration document if Canadian immigration officials have made an error in recording your information when they issued your document.
- An amendment is a paper-based application and will require you to send away your physical study permit.
- You can only request an amendment of a valid temporary resident document.
- IRCC will not amend an expired immigration document.
- You cannot apply to amend an immigration document because of a change in your life that takes place after your document was issued to you.
- For example, IRCC will not amend an immigration document if your name changed because of a marriage or divorce.
- For example, IRCC will not amend an immigration document if your name changed because of a marriage or divorce.
- There is no fee to apply for an amendment.
You can amend a valid study permit if one of the following conditions or remarks does not appear on the document:
- May accept employment on the campus of the institution at which registered in full-time studies
- May work 24 hours per week off campus or full-time during regular breaks if meeting criteria outlined in paragraph 186(v) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.
- May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria, per paragraph R186(f), (v) or (w) and must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria.
Note: If the following remark is printed on your study permit: "This permit does not permit the holder to engage in off campus employment in Canada", and you have become eligible to work on or off campus without a work permit (e.g., you have transferred to an eligible program of study), you must apply to change the conditions of your study permit and pay the applicable fee.
We recommend that you apply as soon as you find an error on your document, as long as the error was made by a Canadian immigration official.
Your study permit must have work conditions/remarks authorizing you to work in Canada before you can apply for a Social Insurance Number and accept employment. If your study permit does not have these remarks and you meet the work eligibility requirements, you should submit your amendment application as soon as possible.
IRCC processing times do not include the time it takes to mail your study permit to and from the IRCC office in Ottawa, so plan accordingly.
