Paul Upton

Professor Emeritus Paul Upton passed away on October 5, 2024 at the age of 85. Paul was one of The Univesity of Lethbridge's first faculty members, joining the University’s English department in 1964. He was born and raised in Calgary and attended the University of Alberta, where he obtained his bachelor’s and master’s. degrees. He left the U of L for a couple of years to attend the University of London, where he worked on his PhD. Upon his return, he found the department vastly expanded. Upton enjoyed a long career, receiving the inaugural Distinguished Teacher Award in 1987. He retired from the University in 1997.

Paul met his future wife, Vlasta, as an undergraduate while attending the University of Alberta and they were married on October 12th, 1963, in Lethbridge. It was a calm, sunny, warm, beautiful fall day filled with stunning colour and love. Paul adored his “Vlast” and was one week shy of celebrating his 62nd wedding anniversary with her. He is survived by Vlasta, his children Vanessa (Jordan) and Ivan, and grandchildren Marisol and Mirabel.
