INDG 2850 Bridging Cultures Between Canada and Mexico

This immersive course is a cultural learning opportunity for Indigenous students from the University of Lethbridge to travel to the Mayan Intercultural University of Quintana Roo in Mexico to learn firsthand about the unique Mayan culture of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. Students will attend Mayan and Spanish classes, attend cultural lectures, witness and participate in cultural activities such as a traditional festival with dances, costumes and food, and visit Mayan communities as well as have time to explore the Yucatán/Mayan area. Students will see how university projects developed by the students are being implemented in their Mayan communities for the benefit of the community. UofL Indigenous students will share about their own Indigenous cultures with the Mayan students.

Cost:

Approximately $5,000, plus spending money. Cost includes tuition, airfare, accommodation, meals, field activities and transportation from Cancun to Quintana Roo. Travel Health Insurance is NOT INCLUDED.

Cost is for domestic students and is subject to change based on enrollment or other factors, but this is a fair estimate for budgeting purposes. Students will be required to have a current passport.

Travel Award:

All undergraduate Indigenous students are eligible for an up to $5,000 Global Skills Opportunity award to be applied towards the cost of the course – based on financial need.
