About the Program

Discover the history and diversity of the European Union during this 2-3 week summer program that brings you right to its founding countries. You can choose between spending two weeks in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France or extending your stay to include a week in Germany and Luxembourg. Both options include a French language crash course, a food tour in Liege, a tour of the Hague, a weekend in Amsterdam and Paris, and a number of other activities.

Student Q&A

Was this your first time travelling abroad?

Yes

Do you have any comments about Liege?

Liege was a nice place to stay. There was a lot of different food options. The people were very kind and the university was really nice and small!

On average, what was the weather like?

I would say the weather was cool, usually in the 20s and cloudy. It was rainy some days as well. However, they said that this type of weather for the time of the year was unusual.

Do you have any comments about the host university?

Muriel (Liege coordinator) was amazing, she is so kind and welcoming and wants to make it the best experience for everyone. She is very open to feedback and also very involved with the program! I enjoyed that each class had a different guest lecturer as it was interesting to hear them speak about the topic they were experts in. This experience was amazing and I would recommend it to anyone!

Were the following provided for you?

  • Airport pick up upon arrival - yes
  • Bedding - yes
  • Kitchen facilities - no

Do you have any comments about the accommodations?

The hotel we stayed at was amazing! The staff were so kind and friendly. Our rooms were very clean and the beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was included and it had many different options! The one downfall I would say is that we were a little bit far from the city centre (it was about a thirty minute walk). However, we were close to the train station which was awesome and there was still plenty of dining options near us. We let Muriel know this and she said she will definitely take it into consideration for next year.

What was your favourite part of the program?

Getting to visit so many different countries and cities. I loved going to Amsterdam, I visited the Anne Frank house (you need to book this in advance as it always sells out!). Paris was also amazing and I loved the river boat cruise and just hanging out by the river. I didn't realize how central Belgium really was, we went on so many fun day trips using the train which was so easy! Bruges was probably one of my favourite cities we visited (we did this on our free day near the end of the program), it was only 2 hours away on train and it was just the cutest city.

Was there anything you disliked about the program?

No!

What would you suggest students pack before leaving Canada if they go on this program?

Rain jacket (I wore mine a lot of the time and I was so glad I brought it)! A small bag/purse that can hold your essentials (I liked carrying a little plastic water bottle around with me). Good walking shoes! You will be doing a lot of walking! You don't need to bring your laptop which is really nice! I just took notes on the notepad they gave me. Some students used their iPads as well.

Do you have any additional comments you would like to share with future students?

Embrace every moment of the experience! It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and I was hesitant about going at first, but I am so glad I decided to go. I made so many friends and had so much fun!
