Or, learn about French culture and earn social science credits while practicing your French language skills through the French Culture & Food or French Culture and Sports courses.
Student Q&A
What did you do in your free time that you recommend to others?
I would recommend to go to the beaches at La Rochelle and to walk around the city. It is also fun to visit the islands around La Rochelle. The bus tickets are cheap and makes it easy to get around the city. In Florence I would recommend going to the leather markets that are all around in basically every square. Make sure it is soft and smells like leather to ensure it is real. I would also say take time to really enjoy the food and try local cuisine. It is also fun to immerse yourself in the student culture and there are many bars and clubs to go out at including the Fete de Musique which happens everywhere in France June 21.
On average, what was the weather like?
The weather in La Rochelle was unpredictable either it was raining or it was very hot. It is hard to predict because it is a costal town but by far the weather was very nice and hot, also very humid. In Paris it was very hot. In Florence it was very hot but if you stay in the shade it helps.
Any additional comments about the city?
I loved La Rochelle the most out of any of the cities. I would recommend that anyone would do an exchange here. It is a tourist town, but it has more locals than tourists which makes the experience very immersive.
Were the following provided for you?
- Airport pick up upon arrival - no
- Bedding - yes
- Kitchen facilities - yes
- Pots, pans, utensils, etc. - yes
What is the best way for students to travel to the university upon arrival?
It was best for you to fly in Charles De Gual and then take the Metro Line to the Montparnasse train station. After this you can take a train to La Rochelle. The campus isn't far from the station, but you can get an Uber.
Additional comments about your host university?
It was an amazing university. They made the experience feel like you were at home and they were always they to support you if you had any problems. Ryan Rose was amazing and created the best trip I could have ever asked for.
Additional comments about accommodations?
The accommodations were very nice and better than most residents I have stayed in.
What was your favourite part of the program?
My favourite part was everything. From the classes to the guided visits of museums and factories - the experience brought me into the world of luxury. The opportunity to experience the cities by yourself during free time was also very helpful because it let you get to know the city better.
Is there anything you suggest students pack before leaving Canada if they go on the same program?
Umbrella, sunscreen, bathing suit, rain jacket, portable charger, sunglasses, comfortable shoes, lots of light clothing (skirts, shorts, dresses, tank tops).
What suggestions do you have for future students participating in the program?
Take your time to get to know everyone in your program and you will make memories you won't forget. If you are able walk around instead of taking public transport do so.
