Nursing Preparation Program
Nursing Preparation Program (NPP)
The Nursing Preparation Program (NPP) is offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Arts & Science. It is intended for applicants who do not qualify for competitive admission to our Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Nursing After Degree program. It provides students with an opportunity to increase their admission averages to improve their chances of successful admission to the B.N. or B.N.AD program, complete prerequisite courses, and/or complete courses that will count toward our Bachelor of Nursing program requirements.
Acceptance into, or completion of, the Nursing Preparation Program does not guarantee admission into a Bachelor of Nursing program.
Frequently Asked Questions
Applicants to B.N. are ranked on the basis of the grade average of the five required courses:
- English Language Arts 30-1
- Biology 30
- Chemistry 30
- Mathematics 30-1 or 30-2
- An eligible 5th grade 12 subject*.
*An eligible 30-level subject must not be a Special Project and must be worth at least five credits (multiple courses worth a total of five or more credits can be used).
Improving your grades in these courses is the most effective way to strengthen your application for later admission competitions.
If you have noncompetitive grades in the courses required for admission, you can take university-level courses in the subject area. For example, if you have a noncompetitive grade in Chemistry 30, you could take CHEM 0500 at ULethbridge. Improving your grades is key for improving your chance of success in future admission competitions.
Applicants to the B.N. After Degree are ranked based on the Casper test score and a GPA calculated using Human Anatomy and Physiology, Statistics, and the terms containing the most recent additional 17 graded university-level term courses. Improving your grades, especially in the courses that are required for admission, is the most effective way to strengthen your competitive admission average for future admission competitions. In addition to other admission requirements, applicants to the B.N. After Degree program must have:
- 3 credit hours in Human Anatomy plus 3 credit hours in Physiology OR 6 credit hours in Human Anatomy and Physiology (combined)1
- 3 credit hours in Statistics1
- 3 credit hours in Fine Arts or Humanities2
- 6 credit hours in Social Sciences2
1Must have been completed within the last 10 years
2 To learn more about which courses have a Fine Arts and Humanities or a Social Science designation, please refer to School of Liberal Education section of the Academic Calendar - ulethbridge.ca/ross/academic-calendar.

Admission requirements
The admission policies and procedures set out in the Admission section of the U of L Calendar apply to this program. Visit our Future Student website for more information about admission requirements and to apply.
NPP does not have any “required courses”. The courses you will take in this program depend on your goals – whether you are trying to improve the competitiveness of your B.N. or B.N.AD application or hoping to decrease your courseload if you are eventually admitted to the B.N. program.
Below, you can see which courses you can take depending on your goals with the Nursing Preparation Program.
Note that admission to the NPP does not guarantee access to courses you may wish to upgrade. In some cases, you may not be able to register for a course because you do not meet a prerequisite for that course, or you may be waitlisted. See ulethbridge.ca/ross/registration/register/waitlists for information about waitlisting.
