This year’s Native Awareness Week from March 6 to 10 will pay tribute to the long-held relationship between the University of Lethbridge and Indigenous peoples.
Among the many events taking place, the U of L, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, will be unveiling its own ceremonial pipe, made by an elder from the Piikani First Nation and engraved with a pronghorn.

In a first for the University of Lethbridge, Yanjun Shi (BA ’14) has been chosen as one of 13 Alberta graduate students to receive the prestigious Alberta SPOR Graduate Studentship in Patient-Oriented Research. The award will provide her with $30,000 in funding for one year, along with mentoring and training opportunities in patient-oriented research.

University of Lethbridge professor Dr. Shelly Wismath can count herself among the best university teachers in Canada. She is one of 10 university teachers to receive the 3M National Teaching Fellowship, an award that recognizes exceptional teachers in post-secondary education.
Dr. Jan Newberry, Wismath’s nominator and U of L sociology professor, describes her as a “teaching ninja” who possesses a subtle and diplomatic style.
