The University of Lethbridge is now covered by the model license negotiated by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and Access Copyright, effective January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015.

The University upheld its Copyright Act obligations during the opt-out phase (September 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012) by obtaining required copying permissions independently.

The University's Access Copyright license once again covers the making of classroom handouts on all of our campuses, which, in the opt-out period, were produced on our behalf by a commercial printer.

In general, day-to-day copying including classroom handouts, must be limited to no more than 10 per cent of a work, or, for example, a single chapter as long as the chapter is no more than 20 per cent of the book.

The University Copyright Advisor office will be focusing over the coming year on raising awareness and understanding of copyright issues, obligations and options across the University.

The signing of this agreement is an interim measure to provide time to ensure that the University community is knowledgeable about its copyright obligations and options for using copyright-protected works.

A full analysis of works used in course-related copying, including uses occurring within the University's learning management system, will be completed over the course of the agreement.

Systematic analyses of reproductions placed on Library Reserve, as well as reproductions produced as course-packs or digital readings, have already been conducted over the past two semesters.

A decision on the longer-term need for an Access Copyright license will be made once a fact-based understanding of the types of works, uses and permissions statuses involved in University course-related copying is obtained.
