The University of Lethbridge is instituting the ABCs of parking this summer, all in an effort to stem confusion over the location of its parking lots.
Over the next few months, parking areas on campus will be renamed. To date, parking lots have been named according to directions (North, Far West, South) or by their area of service (Aperture Park, Exploration Place). Reflecting the fact that some of these lots have directions that are not entirely exact (the North West lot is not exactly north and west of other lots), this has generated confusion for new customers (both staff and students) and especially for visitors to campus.
Parking Services will therefore undertake the process of changing parking lot identification by introducing alphabet letters (Lot A, Lot B, Lot C) as designations. This initiative should allow for better signage to indicate the location of parking lots, and provide an easier way of finding the lots for visitors and new staff and students.
Existing customers will still park in their regular lots, only their designations will change. Faculty and staff who currently purchase permits through payroll deduction will receive their new permits as usual, with a new lot name identified.
As part of this project, the Far West lot and the non-plug area of the West lot, will be combined to form Lot E. Currently, the non-plug area of the West lot is underutilized, while the Far West lot is used to maximum capacity. This change will allow the use of this lot to be maximized.
In addition to changing lot names, dedicated motorcycle parking will be provided in several parking lots on campus. Motorcycle parking areas will be developed in each parking lot area, using concrete curbing to provide protected parking.
Motorcycle parking will be developed in the currently named North West, Exploration Place, and North lots, in addition to the current locations in the Far West and South lots. The Level 6 motorcycle parking area will not be available after Aug. 31, 2009.
This project will include new signage at all parking areas and lot entrances. In addition, parking maps and web pages will be updated to reflect these changes. All work will be completed prior to the end of August.
