An educator whose teaching philosophy is based on the idea that educational experiences should prepare students for life beyond school, Dr. David Slomp (Education) has been appointed a University of Lethbridge Board of Governors Teaching Chair.
Slomp joined the Faculty of Education in 2011 and has quickly established a reputation as an outstanding teacher and researcher.
In the classroom, Slomp rarely lectures, instead assigning readings that contain the content he wants his students to explore. He then invites students to take part in learning activities that help them examine the implications of the reading for their own practice.
His research program centres on evaluation practices and writing improvement. Not only does his research contribute to the field of assessment and evaluation, it is also helping to change the understanding of its role and value to inform effective teaching.
As the Board of Governor’s Teaching Chair, Slomp plans to use his expertise in the area of writing instruction and assessment design to support University programs and faculty.
His appointment as a Board of Governors Teaching Chair is for a two-year term commencing July 1, 2016.
