General Policies for all Applicants
A person who has applied for admission to a program of studies in an undergraduate or graduate program at the University of Lethbridge, either in a full-time, part-time, visiting or any other category of admission, shall not be considered a ‘student’ for the purposes of the rights and privileges accorded to a student of the University of Lethbridge, until the date that the person commences academic studies at the institution.
This same restriction in its entirety applies to Open Studies students and authorization to register.
The University of Lethbridge guarantees that admitted students will have timely access to courses required to complete the student’s program. However, admission to the University does not constitute a guarantee that a student will be able to register for any particular course in a given term.
The University of Lethbridge does not guarantee that students who meet the published minimum requirements will be admitted to any Faculty or School, program, or major. In cases where the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number that can be accommodated, the University reserves the right to limit enrolment in a Faculty or School, or program and to establish minimum criteria beyond the minimum published requirements without advanced notice.
A student admitted or readmitted to the University is governed by the program requirements of the Calendar in effect at the time of the most recent admission (see Academic Regulations, Program Requirements).
Transfer students from institutions other than those with which the University has established transfer arrangements will be treated according to current policies for new student admissions, and therefore be subject to all the requirements of the Calendar in effect at the time of the most recent admission.
Students continuously registered in a formally-approved transfer program or in transferable courses at a post-secondary institution in the Alberta Council of Admission and Transfer are normally admitted and governed under the Calendar of the year of admission to the University of Lethbridge. However, students may opt to be governed by any Calendar from the one in effect at the point of most recent admission to the Transfer Alberta system to the Calendar in effect at the point of admission to the University of Lethbridge by applying to their Faculty or School Academic Advising or Student Program Services office.
The University also recognizes transfer arrangements with the College of the Rockies, Medicine Hat College and Selkirk College. Students who attend the University of Lethbridge under the dual admission agreement will be subject to the Academic Calendar in effect at the point of admission to the University of Lethbridge.
No student will be permitted to enrol in a University of Lethbridge credential program while simultaneously working towards a credential at another institution. This policy does not apply to students studying at a partner institution who have been admitted under the University of Lethbridge’s Dual Admission (see Dual Admission) or Dual Degree agreement with that institution.
This policy applies only to applicants who are not currently attending the University of Lethbridge. Deferral requests will be submitted to Admissions and must include rationale concerning your reason for deferring your admission.
You cannot defer your admission in order to attend another Canadian post-secondary institution (see International applicants note below).
Conditions:
•Deferrals are only available to newly admitted students in non-competitive programs. Deferrals to competitive programs (see Glossary, Competitive Programs) may be reviewed in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the program’s Dean.
•You must have accepted your offer of admission and paid your non-refundable tuition deposit to apply for a deferral.
•Proof of admission requirement completion must be received by the appropriate deferral request deadline to maintain an approved deferral. If this requirement is not satisfied, your deferral may be cancelled.
•Domestic applicants: If your deferral is granted, you may not attend another Canadian post-secondary institution. Attendance at another Canadian post-secondary institution could result in your application being cancelled or the denial of transfer credit. If you attend an international institution during your deferred term(s), you must notify Admissions in writing. An unconditional offer will become conditional should you continue your studies internationally, including attendance at a new institution. Failure to disclose attendance at another post-secondary institution could result in your application being cancelled or the denial of transfer credit.
•International applicants: If your deferral is granted, you may attend an institution outside of Canada while waiting for study permit approval. This intention must be declared on the deferral application. If you begin attending a new institution following your deferral approval, you must notify us in writing. An unconditional offer will become conditional should you continue your studies internationally, including attendance at a new institution. Failure to disclose attendance at another post-secondary institution could result in your application being cancelled or the denial of transfer credit.
•Only one deferral will be granted per application.
•You may apply to defer your offer of admission for up to one full year. For example, you have been admitted to the fall term, you may apply for a one-time deferral to winter, or the following fall term. For programs that only have a fall intake, you would apply for deferral to the following fall term.
•You may inquire with Admissions on early attendance options should you be ready to study at the beginning of a term prior to your stated deferral.
The deadline to submit a deferral request is August 15 for Fall terms and December 1 for winter terms.
An application for deferral may require a processing fee which is noted in the annually approved fee schedules.
