Internal Competitions
ORIS has established a strong foundation for research support through internal funding opportunities to seed projects, provide training opportunities, position applications for external funding success, and disseminate the results of their research. Explore internal competitions.
The Tri-Agency is the umbrella term used to describe the three federal research funding agencies:
- Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
- Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
- Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
Canada Foundation for Innovation
The Canada Foundation for Innovation funds research infrastructure. This includes equipment, laboratories, and databases and the renovations necessary to house them. Awards are granted to the University rather than to an individual faculty member.
Programs
Canada Research Chairs
The Canada Research Chair program invests up to $311 million per year to attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds. Chairholders aim to achieve research excellence in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
Mitacs
Mitacs is a national independent non-profit funding agency that financially supports collaborative projects in any discipline. Students, faculty, and eligible partner agencies can receive funding from Mitacs to support Canadian research and innovation. International opportunities are also available.

Research Security
Canadian-led research can be an attractive target for those seeking to steal, use, and adapt this research for our own advantages and gains. This includes research that could be applied to strategic, military, or intelligence capabilities of other countries.
