Former University of Lethbridge Pronghorn track star Heather Steacy punched her ticket to the Rio Olympic Games this past weekend, meeting the Olympic standard at the Sun Angel Classic Track Meet in Tempe, Arizona.

Steacy had the top five throws of the meet in the hammer throw event and on her sixth and final throw she reached 72.09 metres, which cleared the Olympic standard by more than a metre. The standard to qualify for this year’s Olympics is 71 metres.

As a Pronghorn, Steacy won four Canada West titles, two CIS gold medals, a CIS silver and a CIS bronze medal in her four-year university career. Steacy was also the first CIS woman to eclipse the 20-metre mark in the weight throw.

Rio will be Steacy’s second Olympic games, qualifying for London in 2012, where she finished 33rd.

In London, she represented Canada along with her brother Jim, who is also a two-time Olympian and one of the most decorated track athletes in CIS history.
