The University always puts its best foot forward come Convocation time, breaking out the blue and gold decorations all over campus in celebration of our new graduates.

A carefully coordinated event, Convocation is run like clockwork, with each student accounted for every step of the way. Here, the pre-march lineup count is initiated before everyone heads up the hill.

Thankfully, the weather allowed for all four ceremonies to march outdoors, maintaining a time-honoured tradition at the U of L.

Newly-appointed Chancellor Janice Varzari (BN ’90, MEd ’02) presided over her first Convocation this spring. She is the first U of L alumna to hold the position of Chancellor.

Convocation Chief Marshal Dr. Sheila McManus, carrying the U of L mace, leads the procession up the hill.

Created by sculptor and artist Corne Martens, the University mace is cast in bronze and weighs about eight kilograms. The mace signifies the authority of the Faculties and Schools of the University to grant academic degrees, diplomas and certificates; of the Senate to grant honorary degrees; and of the chancellor to confer degrees, diplomas and certificates.

All the hard work is now done and graduands are eager to celebrate their accomplishment.

The stage is set inside the 1st Choice Savings Centre, with our accomplished music students providing the perfect ambiance.

Everyone gets their hair done for an event as momentous as Convocation.

It's not only the graduands who are excited about the end of their journey. Family members can't hold their enthusiasm for what their loved ones have achieved.

They might not understand what it means right now, but perhaps these little ones will be taking a similar picture as the next generation of U of L graduates in a few short years.

If you're happy and you know it, jump hooray!

It really is all about family, and recognizing the support that each student received along the way to achieving their goal.

A momentous day, a meaningful hug.
