A pair of gold medal performances to cap one of the most decorated CIS track careers in Pronghorn history netted Jim Steacy the Pronghorn Male Athlete of the Week honour. His sister Heather Steacy, after claiming a national bronze medal, copped the female award.
Jim Steacy went into the Canadian Interuniversity Sport track and field championships as the top-rated athlete in both weight throw and shot put. He lived up to his reputation with two dominant performances. Steacy broke his own CIS record in the weight throw, topping the 24-metre mark for the first time with a heave of 24.08m. He then cruised to a win in the shot put event with a season-best toss of 16.99m.
The gold medal victories capped a CIS career that saw him win nine medals, including eight gold. This is in addition to nine Canada West medals (eight gold) and a litany of broken records. His new CIS weight throw record of 24.08m is four metres further than the first CIS record he broke in 2003.
For the first time in her three-year university career, sister Heather Steacy did not win the gold medal she sought at the CIS championships. Instead it was a bronze medal effort for Steacy as she made the most of the last round of throws to rally out of the fourth-place position and make it to the podium.
Steacy would have needed to better her personal-best throw in the weight (set earlier this season) to get into the silver medal position. She now has three CIS medals to her credit, two gold and one bronze.
