University mourns passing of Hotchkiss

The University community expresses its most sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Harley Hotchkiss, a 2007
U of L Honorary Degree recipient, well known entrepreneur, supporter of neuroscience research and key founder of the Calgary Flames.

Hotchkiss passed away Wednesday, June 22 at age 84.

Hotchkiss was a geologist, veteran of the Second World War, entrepreneur and philanthropist who was very influential and successful in shaping Canada's energy industry.

He built on that success to support health research at Alberta's universities - including the University of Lethbridge - by establishing the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.

The Institute is devoted to understanding the way in which the brain controls and coordinates human activities and how the brain recovers from stroke or injury. He was also an owner of the Calgary Flames and his commitment to keeping hockey alive in Calgary is well known.
