Introduction to Museum Studies

Working with the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery or other cultural institutions, students will be introduced to various areas of gallery and museum theory and practice including curating, collections management and research, database practices, registration, exhibition preparation, and public programming. Students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities in relation to museum work including the potential development and installation of a student exhibition in the Penny Gallery or similar venue. Note that the course will require some hours outside of scheduled class meeting time.

Exhibiting Cultures: Art Galleries, Museums and Cultures of Display

Provides a critical framework for examining theoretical issues such as the creations of canons, inclusions and exclusions in museum practices, and the politics of display with respect to race, gender, nationalism, and colonialism.

Museum Studies Internship

Work-integrated learning internship within the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery or other cultural organizations that facilitates practical work experience in an area of museum work, such as exhibitions, collections, communications, and/or public programming). Because this internship requires coordination of placement, students are advised to contact the internship coordinator/course instructor when registration opens.

Undergraduate Thesis
Credit hours: 6.00

This is a challenging, work-intensive, research-oriented course. In consultation with the Thesis Supervisor, students will define a research problem, formulate a research plan, conduct research, report orally, and submit a report in the form of an Undergraduate Thesis or by curating an exhibition with an accompanying essay, which will be made publicly available.
Prerequisite(s):Fourth-year standing (a minimum of 90.0 credit hours) AND
A cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher AND
Completion of a minimum of 9 courses (27.0 credit hours) in Art History and/or Museum Studies AND
Application to the Department of Art
Note:Contact hours will vary. Students should be aware that this course involves regular contact with the Thesis Supervisor as well as considerable independent work.
