Technical, aesthetic, material and theoretical issues are explored within the context of contemporary sculpture. This course provides an introduction to both traditional and contemporary forms of Indigenous creative and cultural practices, with a focus on the concepts, theories, and processes of contemporary Indigenous Art in North America. Topics include: assertions of Indigenous identity, truth and reconciliation, the colonial context in Canada, and connections to the land. Students will consider the critical intent of their work as it relates to current affairs and important cultural, social, and political issues. Students of all levels and backgrounds welcome.

Professional Practice for Artists

This seminar/studio course offers senior art students a comprehensive survey of professional practice in the visual arts. Through assignments, workshops, guest lectures and gallery visits, students are guided through a range of practical activities such as creating a digital portfolio, preparing a CV, writing artist statements, and developing proposals suitable for exhibitions, grants, residencies, and publications. Students will consider community development and social networking, identify research goals, and formulate strategies for dissemination of art production.
