Indigenous Healing and Restoration

Examination of the meanings and mechanisms of healing and restoration, and the different ways that healing activities function at the physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual levels. Several perspectives will be incorporated including medical anthropology, psychiatry, psychology, Indigenous studies, and traditional Indigenous knowledge.

Traditional Aboriginal Health Concepts

Contemporary Issues in Aboriginal Health

Indigenous Community Development

Indigenous Community Development introduces the foundational concepts and skills needed to engage with and develop wellness initiatives in Indigenous communities. This course will balance theoretical knowledge with applied activities and projects common to human service organizations. It will emphasize holistic relational approaches to community-led development and capacity building. Topics may include social and economic development, community planning and organizing, relationship building, rights-holder and stakeholder engagement, funding and grant writing, Indigenous leadership, and professional communications.

Indigenous Health Research Methods

The Indigenous Health Research Methods course aims to build on previously cultivated knowledge that will support the development of Indigenous Health Research that meets and/or exceeds the dual criteria of Indigenous community relevance and scientific excellence. This course will provide an introduction into decolonial research methods used in and by Indigenous communities to advance Indigenous community-based health knowledge and expertise. Students will learn how to practically implement and apply Indigenist health research methods in partnership with Indigenous organizations and communities through demonstrations, discussion, and partnerships. Students will prepare a small research project using the techniques learned in class.
