A Vision for the Future: Renovating University Hall Together

Dear University of Lethbridge Community,

As many of you know, the Alberta government invested $3 million to undertake planning work associated with reimagining University Hall (Destination Project II) and ensuring the longevity of this iconic structure. This project represents not only a physical transformation of University Hall but a commitment to the future of our students, faculty and the communities we serve.

Why This Project Matters
The renovation of University Hall will support the University as it achieves its mandate as a comprehensive research university. This revitalization will have a meaningful impact for on-campus operations that benefit students, faculty and staff, while the teaching, research and community outreach activities that will occur in University Hall in the decades to come will also improve economic and quality of life outcomes for our region and beyond.

Reimagining University Hall for 21st-century learners, we will enhance the educational experience for students, ensuring they have access to accessible and innovative spaces where resiliency and dynamic transferable skills will be developed, equipping them for success in a rapidly changing world. It will also enable collaborative research opportunities for our outstanding academic staff and students. Finally, it will be a meeting place for our broader community to exchange perspectives and engage with our institution.

We also know that Alberta’s population will significantly grow in the decades ahead. Ensuring the longevity of University Hall for the decades to come will allow us to meet future demand associated with this growth.

Sustainability and Resilience at the Core
Our priority is to ensure that University Hall is a viable, efficient environmentally responsible space for the next century. By incorporating energy-efficient technologies and adhering to modern safety standards, we can significantly reduce the building's environmental footprint.

In modernizing University Hall, we also have an exciting opportunity to honour its rich architectural history. As an iconic piece of our heritage, this renovation will enhance its relevance and accessibility, inviting greater community interaction through events, exhibits and activities.

Engaging the Community: The Consultation Process
In the coming months, we will initiate a comprehensive consultation process (that will include a survey for our university community) that aims to foster transparency and inclusivity. We want to hear from all members of our university community and beyond as we embark on this transformative journey. Your insights will be crucial in shaping the direction of this project. We will also engage our external community and partners to ensure future activities in University Hall support our region.

To keep everyone informed, we will share updates through subsequent UWeekly issues and have launched a dedicated project landing page about the project.

I invite everyone to participate in this process, as your feedback will help guide the successful evolution of University Hall. Together, we will create an innovative, sustainable, and culturally vibrant space that enhances the experience of our students and the broader community.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to the University of Lethbridge.

Sincerely,
