The following is an update from University of Lethbridge President Dr. Mike Mahon on the AUPE definite layoffs
As a result of the recent Alberta Government decision to immediately increase the Campus Alberta Operating Grant to the University of Lethbridge by 2.62%, an agreement has been reached between the University of Lethbridge and the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) to cancel all future planned definite layoff days effective immediately.
AUPE and the University have agreed that while all future planned dates will be cancelled, two days of definite layoffs already served will remain in effect. AUPE employees who have had more than two layoff days are requested to consult with their supervisor on options available to them regarding those excess days. More information about these options will be made available in the coming days.
As I have mentioned previously, the work the University community has undertaken to balance its operating budget since the March 7, 2013 provincial budget announcement has been difficult but absolutely necessary. At the beginning of our budget reduction process we reaffirmed three values to guide us through our decision making people, quality and access. Considering our values, and utilizing this recent reinvestment by the Alberta Government, this agreement between the University and AUPE to cancel the future definite layoffs will allow us to maintain our service to students and acknowledge the fundamental role AUPE members fulfill in our community. I want to thank AUPE for its willingness to work with the University to reach this agreement and I want to thank all the AUPE employees of the University for their continued hard work and commitment to the University of Lethbridge.
Dr. Mike Mahon
President & Vice-Chancellor
