The University of Lethbridge will lower its flag on Thursday, Nov. 7, in honour of former Canadian senator and renowned Manitoba lawyer Murray Sinclair, who passed away Monday, Nov. 4 at the age of 73.
Sinclair, Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge, was the Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and oversaw the production and release in 2015 of the seminal document “Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future” – The Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
The TRC report established a way forward for our country to confront the truth about Canada’s residential school system and then created a foundation for reconciliation. Its 94 Calls to Action were embraced by the University of Lethbridge upon the report’s release and continue to inform our ongoing journey to achieving true reconciliation.
Through Murray Sinclair’s guidance and steady hand, the TRC Report and its Calls to Action have proven to be one of the most important documents in the modern history of our country. His service to Canadians cannot be overstated.
Further information on Murray Sinclair’s exceptional life can be found here.
