The University of Lethbridge is saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Emeritus Dr. Raymond Huel, and sends it deepest condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues. Huel passed away Monday, Sept. 2, at the age of 86.

Huel was a fixture in the ULethbridge Department of History for nearly 30 years and one of the key figures in helping shape the liberal education philosophy of the institution. Huel taught at the University from 1974 to his retirement in 2003, and earned the Speaker Research Medal for his outstanding research work in 2000.

Not only did Huel make an indelible impression on ULethbridge as one of its preeminent faculty members, his legacy was carried on by his three children, Henri (BA '94), Charles (BA '05) and René (BSc '98), who essentially grew up in the University before attending as students and graduating with ULethbridge degrees. Please see this feature story for more on the Huel family legacy.

Huel was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, Sept.14, 1937, and grew up on the south Saskatchewan prairies. Raymond married Laureen in 1965 while continuing his studies at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina. There he obtained his Bachelor of Arts Honors and Masters of Arts in History, before moving to Edmonton to obtain his Doctorate of Philosophy in History from the University of Alberta.

A full obituary notice is available here.

The Huel family will hold a private remembrance with a public celebration of life to be announced at a later date.

The University will lower its flag in honour of Huel on Monday, Sept. 9.
