Condolence Notice — John (Jack) Oviatt

The University extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends and former colleagues of Jack Oviatt, who passed away March 18 at the age of 87.

Originally from Cardston, Oviatt attended the University of Alberta at Calgary after completing a mission in South Africa. He taught school for a couple of years before becoming an admissions officer at his alma mater. When he heard about the University of Lethbridge being established and needing a registrar, he applied.

Owen Holmes hired him in 1967 to be the first registrar for the University. He began working when the campus was still located on the grounds of the then-Lethbridge Junior College. He and his staff moved into University Hall when it opened in 1971. He continued in his role until 1992, seeing multiple changes in record-keeping systems at the institution during that time. He then served as executive secretary to the Senate from July 1, 1992 to December 31, 1992. You can listen to Oviatt talk about his time at ULethbridge in his oral history interview with historian Dr. Jim Tagg in 2010.

An obituary is available online at Salmon and Sons Funeral Home. A service is planned for 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 22 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, North Stake Center, located at 560 Highlands Blvd. W.

The University will lower its flags on Saturday and Sunday in Oviatt’s honour.
