The University of Lethbridge extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and former colleagues of Dr. Paul Upton, who passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at the age of 85.

Upton was one of ULethbridge’s first faculty members, joining the University’s English department in 1964. He was born and raised in Calgary and attended the University of Alberta, where he obtained his bachelor’s and master’s. He left ULethbridge for a couple of years to attend the University of London, where he worked on his PhD. Upon his return, he found the department vastly expanded. Upton was one of the first two recipients of the Distinguished Teacher Award, along with David Spinks, in 1987. He enjoyed a long career and retired from ULethbridge in 1997.

A brief obituary is available on the Martin Brothers website. This notice will be updated as more information becomes available.

In honour of Upton, the University will lower its flags on Thursday, Oct. 10.
