On Wednesday, November 1st, international violist Rivka Golani returns to Lethbridge to perform a concert with pianist and U of L music department chair Deanna Oye, in support of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Bursary for U of L students, and dedicated to Joe Crowshoe Sr. This is the third concert that Rivka and Deanna have played together in support of this bursary fund (2013, 2014, and now 2017). Rivka was awarded the title of honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the U of L in 2013, in recognition of her work in building an international music festival in Southern Alberta, and for her continuing and growing relationship with the FNMI people of this area.
Rivka Golani is recognized as one of the great violists and musicians of modern times. BBC Magazine included her in its list of the 200 Most Important Instrumentalists and the Five Most Important Violists currently concertizing. Her contributions to the advancement of viola technique have already given her a place in the history of the instrument and have been a source of inspiration not only to other players but also to many composers who have been motivated to write specially for the viola. More than 300 pieces have been written for Rivka, of which more than 70 are concertos.
The concert will include the Brahms f-minor sonata for viola and piano; Schumann’s mercurial miniatures for viola/piano duo, Märchenbilder; little-known character pieces by Edward Elgar; along with arrangements by virtuoso violinist Fritz Kreisler of music by Antonin Dvořák, Cécile Chaminade and Johannes Brahms.
