What is involved when a book is conserved and how are these decisions made? 

Book conservators are binders with training in the history and material science of book construction and the physical factors that cause deterioration. Professional conservators are obligated to abide by a set of ethical standards established by the field. What factors are considered to meet client needs while slowing deterioration, extending useful life and enhancing use of the damaged item? Using examples and before and after photos, this talk will address the conservation of several books from the University of Lethbridge Collection, the decision making methodology used to determine a treatment plan and the outcome of the treatments.

Lisa Isley is an accredited professional conservator with over 10 years experience in bound materials of all periods, as a fine binder and conservator of paper based materials. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta, a Certificate in Studio Arts Alberta College of Art and Design, and a Book Conservation Diploma American Academy of Bookbinding. Lisa has participated in numerous professional development courses, conferences and internships. She is a former director on the board of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild (2005-2013). Her services include treatments, reproductions, assessments, surveys, lectures, workshops, consultations, preservation planning and project management. Clients include public museums, archives, libraries as well as private and corporate collections.
