Social Justice Art Exhibition

This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

The Sociology Club is hosting and curating a drop-in Social Justice Art Exhibition in Galileo's Lounge from October 26th-30th. Art content will range from topics of women's rights and feminist art, human rights, global politics, race and ethnicity, and bodily norms. Art mediums so far include photographs, sculptures, clothing, sketches, paintings, videos, and songs.

We decided to put on this event to provide students with the opportunity to question harmful stereotypes, draw on their own experiences in combination with their class materials, and explore artistic activism. We chose Galileo's to offer a no-pressure environment for people to explore the artistic content. It is our hope that the meaningful artwork will work on shifting commonly held perspectives that can contribute to an often damaging ideology for certain groups and individuals in society. Moreover, it is an opportunity for participants to think critically and enhance their academic experience. We hope to bring students and community members together, help to break down assumptions, and ultimately contribute towards improving social justice awareness in Lethbridge.
