The concept of openness in education and scholarship centers around a vision of equity and innovation through freely shared knowledge. Though the movement itself is broad, an essential component is open licenses that enable the free sharing and use of copyright-protected content. Creative Commons licenses offer a standardized way to grant or receive permission to use or even adapt a work. These free legal tools are available to any creator, student, instructor, researcher or professional, but they do require an understanding of how to enact the license terms and a degree of copyright literacy.
To offer an entry point into open practice, Beth Cormier will facilitate a short workshop where participants interact with openly licensed images and create attributions. Beth recently completed the Creative Commons Certification course for Educators and will draw from openly licensed material developed during the course.
The practical application and transformative potential of Creative Commons licenses will then be explored further through a panel discussion featuring University of Lethbridge colleagues. Ryan Harper-Brown and Alyssa White will share experiences working with Creative Commons licenses in their teaching or academic work. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and generate ideas around how the licenses might support their own work or that of their students. Dr. Rumi Graham, University of Lethbridge Copyright Advisor, will be on hand to reinforce how Creative Commons licenses expand what is allowed under Copyright. She will also share information about building your own textbook or manual on the Pressbooks platform via the Open Education Alberta initiative.
