Maxwell Stein, French horn & Deanna Oye, piano

Join us for a captivating afternoon recital that explores the French Horn's rich, contrasting tones through a diverse array of works by composers from around the world. Notably, the program will feature a stunning piece by Japanese-Canadian composer Cait Nishimura, alongside beloved standards by Neuling, Nelhybel, and Bowen. This unique performance will highlight the horn’s versatility, from bold fanfare to lyrical beauty, in an unforgettable noon hour of music.
Maxwell Stein is an accomplished American hornist living in Calgary, Canada since 2019. He holds the position of Third Horn in the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. You can also find him performing in the pit for regular performances with the Calgary Opera and The Alberta Ballet. Maxwell is frequently sought after to coach students at university music programs including for the Mount Royal Conservatory of Music, the University of Calgary, and most recently at Wichita State University. In April 2023, Maxwell was invited to the Mount Royal Conservatory of Music for a three-day residency alongside brass colleagues of the Calgary Philharmonic. Recent soloists Maxwell has performed with include Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, Emanuel Axe, Christine Goerke, and Bernadette Peters. He has performed at venues across North America, most notably Carnegie Hall and Symphony Center in Chicago. Maxwell completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance with Adam Unsworth and Bryan Kennedy. He then pursued graduate studies at the Shepherd School of Music of Rice University under the tutelage of William VerMeulen.
Pianist Deanna Oye is Associate Professor and Studio Coordinator in the Department of Music where she teaches Studio Piano and directs the U of L Collaborative Ensemble, and also teaches with the University of Lethbridge Conservatory of Music. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music where she studied with Dr. Jean Barr, and has given solo and collaborative performances throughout Canada, the U.S., Scotland, Germany, and Japan, with broadcasts on CBC Radio Two and National Public Radio in the U.S. Deanna is active as an adjudicator, master class clinician and is frequently invited to give career talks to aspiring musicians. She is also passionate about helping her students make connections between music and their other passions and mentoring them to find their own unique niche in the music world.
