Infrastructure as practice
6 p.m. | February 5, 2024
Room L1060, ULethbridge Library building

Brian McBay joins us virtually in Room L1060 for this talk.

Brian McBay is co-founder and Executive Director of 221A, an arts organization based on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) territories (Vancouver) that researches and develops social, cultural, and ecological infrastructure. 221A currently operates a growing portfolio of 140,000 square feet of non-market artist housing, artist studios, and cultural programming spaces.

McBay is of mixed Chinese-Canadian and European descent, and is part of a new generation of leaders aiming to advance the public appreciation of the arts while also reversing inequality, xenophobia, and colonialism in Canada. He is currently spearheading the creation of the Cultural Land Trust, a newly formed and collaboratively governed portfolio of real estate assets focused on long-term security of non-profit cultural spaces. He was named a 2018 Fellow at the Salzburg Global Forum and has been appointed to the City of Vancouver Arts and Culture Policy Council, Vancouver International Film Festival, and the Board of the National Gallery of Canada.
