Art NOW speaker series presents David Knight (MFA-Art '23)
Recontextualizing and Examining the Built Environment
12 pm MT | November 24, 2023
University Recital Hall
This Art NOW talk discusses the built environment and considers its effect on movement, perception, memory and narrative as well as the juxtaposition of imitation and alternation. We are directed by common architectural features like stairs and windows which dictate ease of movement, accessibility, and security in everyday life. By separating windows and stairs from their usual placement within an architectural structure, recontextualizing and altering them through conventional and personalized measurements David Knight examines how different architectural configurations might open unexplored conditions of the built environment.
The artist joins us virtually in the recital hall for this talk.
David Knight is an artist originally from Wallaceburg, Ontario. He received an Advanced Diploma in Fine Art from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario in 2017, his BFA at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2019, and completed his MFA in Visual Arts at the University of Lethbridge in 2023. His research and art practice explores architectural phenomena and the history of measurement, using the potential of sculpture to engage and reimagine common architectural forms like stairs and windows to question the boundaries of collective and individual imagination, perception, memory and history.
