presents:
Nationalism and Regionalism: Observations on the Case of Spain
by Dr. Trevor Harrison
Spain held a general election in July 2023. The result was inconclusive. The governing Spanish Socialist Workers Party won 121 seats (out of 350), while the right-of-centre Peoples Party won 137 seats. The SSWP remains in power, however, with the help of a left-wing political party and two Catalan independence parties whose support is conditional on amnesty for those who declared independence for Catalonia in 2017. The idea of amnesty is widely rejected by many Spanish citizens, leaving the country divided. Within this backdrop, the presentation will focus on the historic nature of Spain’s political divisions and why unity has often proven difficult. More broadly, the presentation will focus on the problems of nationalism, regionalism, and identity faced by many federal states.
