National Indigenous Veterans Day with guest speaker JR Fox

Please join us in the Iikaisskini (Low Horn) Gathering Centre to acknowledge Indigenous Veterans on National Indigenous Veterans Day, November 8, from 1-3 p.m. featuring guest speaker and Indigenous Veteran JR Fox. Opening prayer and smudge with Elder Francis First Charger.

This event is held in recognition of mental health and in partnership with Indigenous Wellness Wednesdays, organized with Santanita Oka, Indigenous Mental Health Outreach Worker in Iikaisskini Indigenous Services.

Indigenous Veterans Day is observed in Canada on November 8, in recognition of Indigenous contributions to military service, particularly in the First World War, Second World War and the Korean War. National Aboriginal Veterans Day was first observed in Winnipeg on November 8, 1994, and has since spread nationwide.

There will be beverages and light refreshments provided.

Bio:

JR Fox, son of Lambert Fox and the late Yvonne Fox, was born and raised in southern Alberta on the Blood Indian Reserve. Mr. Fox was a United States Marine from 1999-2007 and was deployed during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Mr. Fox was also a police officer with Blood Tribe Police Service and other police agencies. Mr. Fox has received several awards due to his leadership skills, extensive training and work experience. Additionally, he has received the rights to conduct capturing ceremonies for a headdress transfer and to paint horses for other ceremonies. Mr. Fox currently works for the Blood Tribe and owns/operates a catering/security company.

Recently, JR Fox was the individual who captured Dr. Digvir Jayas, for the Headdress transfer ceremony during the presidential installation.
