National Indigenous Peoples Day on campus

On June 21 it is National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD), a day to recognize and celebrate the culture and contributions of Indigenous Peoples to communities across Canada. There are many activities planned throughout the community to mark National Indigenous Peoples Week.

Join Iikaisskini Indigenous Services on Wednesday, June 19 at 11 a.m. for NIPD celebrations on campus.

Elder-in-Residence Ninnaisipistoo (Owl Chief), Francis First Charger will share a Blackfoot prayer and smudging over the coals in the Iikaisskini (Low Horn) Gathering Centre (W650) followed by a discussion — "What it means to be Niitsitapi." Light refreshments will be available.

Reconciliation Lethbridge is also hosting an NIPD Celebration in Galt Gardens on Friday, June 21 from noon to 7 p.m.

Opening ceremonies are at noon. There will be guest speakers, Indigenous bands, dancers and drummers, an artisan market, concession and a Teepee village with Elders. There will also be a youth blanket exercise at 1:30 p.m. and an adult blanket exercise at 5 p.m.

Fort Whoop-Up will also host a day full of learning on Friday, June 21 with free admission from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
