Feminist Borders and Boundaries of Souther Alberta: Graduate Student Experiences

This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

This roundtable addresses the specific experiences of feminist graduate students—Karissa Patton (HIST), Brittney Adams (WGST) , Jesse Couture (KINES), and Anastasia Sereda(WGST)— at the University of Lethbridge. The panelists believe that the prevailing social, political, and religious conservatism of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta provides a challenging opportunity for feminist activism. Moreover, as they suggest, Lethbridge is a unique somewhat remote yet growing urban setting, influenced greatly by the surrounding rural agricultural and First Nations communities. Panelists will highlight the various overlapping spaces of, and reciprocal relationships between, urban and rural, local and global, as well as considering activist connections between local community organizations and the university campus.  Individual student experiences with Womanspace Resource Centre; the Campus Women’s Centre; the Lethbridge YWCA; the Those Feminists! CKXU weekly radio show, as well as men as feminists will be discussed.  Commentary on their presentations will be provided by Dr. Kristine Alexander, CRC and co-director of the Institute for Child and Youth Studies (ICYS) with moderation by Dr. Carol Williams (WGST).
