That humanity has inflicted racially motivated hatred on itself in the decades since the publication of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species in 1859 is undeniable. Of course, such contempt for others existed long before Charles Darwin’s tome went to press. In the mythology of human origins and cultural history promulgated by the major Young Earth Creationist ministries, however, Darwin and his theory become totemic of the original human sin and all sin since. Evolution is portrayed as foundational to the Holocaust and other examples of extreme racism in the modern world. Alongside this rhetoric, however, Christian culpability in colonialism, slavery, racism and genocide is swept under the carpet. The social good of combating racism in contemporary North American society becomes a casualty in the war against secularism and science for cultural authority.
