"Building stones and the urban geology of Lethbridge"

Join us for the first Architecture & Design NOW guest lecture of the fall 2024 season as we welcome Dr. Hester Jiskoot!
Weather, daylight and audience-mobility dependent, Hester will lead a short walking tour around campus following her talk. The walk will start at the library entrance and may venture into the coulees. It will be on paved and unpaved paths. The audience will be shown some of the local geological history, building stones, and glacial erratics. Wear outdoor shoes and appropriate clothes. Participation in the hike is voluntary and at your own risk.
Dr. Hester Jiskoot is Professor in the Department of Geography & Environment at the University of Lethbridge. She studied Physical Geography and Glaciology at the Universities of Amsterdam and Leeds. Hester’s research interests are broadly in Arctic & Alpine Processes. Since 1991, she has been a member and leader of glaciological expeditions in, amongst others, Greenland, Svalbard, the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, the Himalayas; and in 2019 she sailed the Northwest Passage.
In her Glaciology & Geoscience Lab, Hester and her research students use fieldwork, remote sensing, and computer modelling to study glaciological, atmospheric and geological processes. She has also supervised students in projects related to the southern Alberta regional geology of which you will see some results today. Hester is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, an NSERC University Faculty Award recipient and is currently Chief Editor of International Glaciological Society’s scientific journals.
