Ian MacLachlan was born a Montrealer but completed his doctorate in geography in Canada’s rival metropolis at the University of Toronto. Ian has always relished opportunities for global travel and research. During his thirty-year career at the University of Lethbridge, Ian held visiting appointments in Japan, Mexico, Scotland and Australia. Upon retirement, Ian’s third career brought him to Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School where he was a Professor in the School of Urban Planning and Design until 2024. His research interests span urban and regional planning, urban housing issues, and the architectural history of skyscrapers, with publications in journals such as Cities, Urban History, and Eurasian Geography and Economics. As Professor Emeritus in Geography and Environment at the University of Lethbridge, he continues to work on research projects in China and Canada and serves as a guest lecturer on several oceanic cruise ship lines.
