AI, Avatars & Aliens: A Speculative Cabaret!
March 13-15 | 7:30 p.m. nightly | David Spinks Theatre (W425)
Directed by Mia van Leeuwen and Julia Wasilewski (BA '05, BFA - Multidisciplinary '07)
Designed by Drama students, Dave Smith and Lee Burckes
How might artificial intelligence impact the future of human creativity? How do avatars help us explore identity? Where are all the aliens at?
This speculative intersection of science and art engages with the questions, themes, aesthetics and technologies of AI, Avatars and Aliens, the results of which will culminate in a cabaret that includes a variety of works from the University of Lethbridge community.
Embracing technology and aesthetics of the past, inspiration for the cabaret comes from creative pieces like Star Trek, Indiana Jones, 2001: A Space Odessey and David Bowie. The cabaret will feature a Ziggy Stardust-inspired cosmic host, alumni and comedian, Conner Christmas.
“The audience will be transported to our vintage sci-fi dream world as soon as they enter the space,” co-director Julia Wasilewski says. “Collaborating with our design team, Lee Burckes and David Smith, and graduate student Lucy Du, we have created an experience that will spark nostalgia, raise questions about the future and incite much laughter.”
Tickets are $20 regular, $15 alumni and senior, $10 students, and are available at the University of Lethbridge Box Office located in the UCA Atrium (Monday to Friday, 12:30-3:30 p.m.) or online: ulethbridge.ca/tickets.
