Children to announce their favourite animal behaviour book

Monday, June 6, 2016

Media are invited to join Mike Williams’ Grade 3/4 class at Park Meadows School on Wednesday, June 8 at 10:45 a.m., when his students will reveal their choice for the winner of the Animal Behaviour Society’s Outstanding Children’s Book Award.

Dr. Jennifer Mather, a University of Lethbridge psychology professor and octopus expert, is a member of the book selection committee and, in early May, she delivered copies of the four books being considered for this year’s book award to the classroom. Williams’ students have pored over the books and are now ready to announce their favourite. The students’ ranking of the books will join the rankings of hundreds of other students, with the overall highest ranking book becoming the winner.

The finalists include Bite into Bloodsuckers, a book about blood-thirsty insects from bedbugs to butterflies. The Octopus Scientists features Mather’s recent research expedition to the island of Moorea in French Polynesia. The Queen’s Shadow: A Story about How Animals See uses a detective story to illuminate the visual powers of various animals. What’s the Buzz?: Keeping Bees in Flight gives young readers insight into the life of bees.
