The plot thickens:

Dr. Irene Spry , editor of the Palliser Papers rationalized that the lake near the top of the North Kananaskis Pass (Maude Lake) was flowing east instead of west because an avalanche had blocked off the western flow since Palliser's visit. (Hmm.. Her retracing of the route was by helicopter. I'll reserve judgement on that one until I get a chance to trace the North Kananaskis Pass or talk to an avalanche expert who has.)

In the meantimec onsider this:

Elk Pass is largely a soggy meadow today. Specially placed logs now take the hiker across. Palliser described a small lake, about half an acre in area. Were we walking on that lake?
