This map prepared by the Palliser Expedition shows Kettle Falls (now under water) and an American Military Base that was established that same year.
The earlier Colville nearby that Kane was referring to was an old Hudson's Bay company post named after Andrew Colville an official of the company. It was abandonned in 1883.
