The earliest sketch of Waterton Lakes that has survived to this day was done by James M. Alden, an American artist with the 1860 Northwest Boundary Survey. A look at this sketch shows four teepees at the spot where Blakiston probably made his sketch. Archaeological work carried out at that spot has shown that this same spot has been popular for centuries.
