The American Haigs

(written by my father Arthur Haig)

The line of the Haig family of which I am a part, descends from my great grandparents, John Haig and Joanna Scott Haig of Jedburgh who emigrated to North America in 1819 and settled in Upper New York State. It is probably, but not proven, that my great grandfather was the son of William Haig, merchant, of Jedburgh and Janet Wood Haig. Their relationship if any, to the Bemersyde Haigs is not established.

Much of what I am about to relate now comes from an essay which I received many years ago entitled "A Bit of Family History". It was written by my aunt Jennie Haig Beck and edited by her younger sister, my aunt Necia Haig Buck.

Before leaving Scotland he had married Joanna Scott. In 1820, the first of their 9 children was born. He, like his father, was called John. This American born John Haig was my grandfather.

The 9 children were as follows:

And about the same time a family and a soon-to-be bride arrived from near Glasgow,
