The Lewis and Clark party was faced with two choices: build a winter camp up river near the Cascades or remain near the ocean. To resolve this question the captains asked the opinion of each member of the expedition.

The party turned around and headed south, crossed the isthmus of the Columbia.

Today, the traveler need only take the Astoria bridge.

Completed in 1966 it spans 4.1 miles and claims to be the longest continuous three-span truss series bridge in the world.

For a view of the area travelled you will want to climb the 164 steps to the observation platform on the Astoria Column
